Federico Bianchi Contemporary Art is pleased to present Domenico Piccolo's fifth solo show, opening on Jan.25, 2014 at 6 p.m. in Via Imbonati 12, Milano.
The show's title is "Pittura" (Painting) and will include - through his newest production - the peculiar work of the artist, who challenges himself with various techniques and painting surfaces. Especially in his last works the colour structure becomes more intense and the brush stroke less liquid and more mellow and lumpy, depending on the various surfaces used for the works, from paper, to cardboard, to greaseproof paper, canvas, photographic paper and acetate; with the exception of a small series of works on paper - which result almost ethereal and impalpable - on the models of some previous projects.
Common denominator of the show is especially the iconography of the works, which during last year shifted to a greater attention to the landscape and the objects instead of the human figure. The latter remains perceived in the artist's works, sometimes as desolate absence, sometimes as imagined presence or embodied object, this all leads to the themes of war and border line, where the tension between the subject of the work and the material structure surrounding it is always central.
The artist resolves the "setting" in a different way each time. Sometimes we find a pictoric sfumato, where spaces have unclear outlines, almost made up; sometimes the claustrophoby of the angles of closed rooms won't give the audience any opportunity to escape; sometimes too-open spaces suggest a necessary but at the same time unuseful escape; eventually liquid and materic monochormies, which have no way out and look almost dreamlike, show us items and characters in an atemporal and aspatial limbo, as if time and events were inescapable.
In substance, this is an umpeteenth prove of the enourmous potential of the "painting" means, which can't just be narrative but is above all expressionistically moving.
